I agree wholeheartedly with Jeremiah Tan of Kuala Krai in chiding the Terengganu government which came out with a special supplement in the major local paper publishing names of schools and students who received straight As in UPSR recently. They cannot be serious!. It is only UPSR. On one hand we are criticising the Ministry of Education and the school system for putting too much emphasis on academic performance and the Ministry is putting in various efforts to correct the imbalance such as coming up with a more holistic exam system by 2011. And lo and behold we have a state government putting up thousands of dollars praising schools and students for their UPSR performance, listing out every names and schools!. I remember those days it was done for the HSC candididates and they were 20 years old by then! We know Terengganu is proud of their students performance, after they purportedly topped the UPSR achievement for the 9th year running. So what?, These kids were only 12 years old. They still have many more years ahead of them, many more things they still have to face, many more things could have happened. For those who did not make it, it is not the end of the world. Their journey is just beginning. One wonder if the amount spent to come up with the supplement could have been better utilised by improving the lot who did not quite make it. After all the percentage of students who did not get straight As is a lot more and they still have a long way to go.
